In the illumination series, I burn the old matches that still contained sulfur in their head. Sulfur belongs to the tradition of alchemy as one of the essential elements in nature and represents the soul. Did the matches remember their sacred tree origins? When struck, the matches explode and release their latent energy transforming them into ancient contemporary totem poles in memorial to their ancestors.
